LEE Chong Wei treated himself to his eighth straight national men’s
singles title while Tee Jing Yi presented herself with her first
national women’s singles crown in Johor Baru yesterday.
Chong Wei swept aside Kuan Beng Hong 21-17, 21-13 in just 30
minutes while birthday girl Jing Yi upset favourite Lydia Cheah 21-10,
11-21, 21-11 in 40 minutes in the National Grand Prix Finals in Johor
Baru.
Chong Wei, who has remained unbeaten in local tournaments since 2003, has a slow start where he trailed 11-4 in the first game.
But Beng Hong, who already conceded on Saturday he had no chance of
beating the World No 1, soon found himself outclassed by Chong Wei.
Jing Yi, who turns 19 today, said she was all fired up to beat Lydia as she wanted something special to celebrate her birthday.
Chong Wei, who chalked up his 19th consecutive title (he o won 11
open events in the national circuit) said: “Having achieved my aim of
defending my national title, my target now is to win my first All
England title.

“I want to forget about my Super Series wins earlier this year and be in top condition going into the tournament next month.
"During the Chinese New Year break next week, I must watch my diet
and continue with light training as it is too close to the All England.
"Everyone has been saying that my opponent in the All England is
Lin Dan (of China) but what is important is that I don't think too much
about him and just concentrate on my preparation.”
Jing Yi said her success yesterday has boosted her confidence ahead
of the Uber Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur on May 9-16 where she aims to
play as the third singles.
"I remained calm and that helped me to win my first national senior title. I made the final in 2007 but lost to Julia (Wong).
“I was more prepared this time as I knew I had the opportunity to
win especially after (Wong) Mew Choo didn't qualify for the event,”
said Jing Yi who was part of the 2008 Uber Cup squad and the victorious
Sea Games squad Laos last year where she played as third singles.
Veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah denied young pair Mak Hee
Chun-Tan Wee Kiong the men's doubles title when they battled to a
21-16, 20-22, 21-13 win in 50 minutes.
Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei scored an easy 21-14, 21-12 win over back-up
pair Lim Yin Loo-Ng Paou Leng in 30 minutes in the women’s doubles
final.
Pei Tty had earlier clinched the mixed doubles crown with
Fairuizizuan Tazai after beating Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying 21-18,
16-21, 21-19 in 46 minutes.
