IT was all over for Malaysia in the German Open as Hafiz Hashim and
Wong Choong Hann crashed out in the semi-finals in Mulheim last night.
Hafiz found the going tough against second seed Chen Long and lost
21-15, 21-19 in 37 minutes.
Choong Hann, 34, was unable to make a
breakthrough against top seed Bao Chunlai of China and lost 21-18,
21-13 in 39 minutes.
Hafiz could have made life difficult for
Chen Long as he led 14-9 in the second game but allowed the latter to
fight back to book a final berth with a straight-game victory.
Choong
Hann and Hafiz have less than two months to show marked improvement
ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals in May where they are expected to play
second and third singles respectively.
On the other hand, it is a
boost for Chunlai and Chen Long who are China's third and reserve
singles in the Thomas Cup.
In the men's doubles, Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How and Mak Hee
Chun had fallen in the quarter-finals.
Their defeat is a clear
indication that Malaysia's options in the doubles look thin for the
Thomas Cup and the pressure will be on Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and
Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari to deliver in May.
In the
women's singles, Wong Mew Choo also fell in the quarter-finals after
losing 21-13, 20-22, 21-13 to Malaysia Open champion Wang Xin of China.
