LEE Chong Wei may have an easy ride in the first round of the All
England which begins today in Birmingham but his compatriots are
expected to face more severe tests.
Chong Wei, the World No 1, should have no problems against Chetan
Anad of India but it will not be the same for veteran Wong Choong Hann
and Hafiz Hashim.
Choong Hann, 34, will play Indonesia No 3
Simon Santoso in his opening game while Hafiz gets a rematch against
Taiwan's Hsieh Yu Hsing.
Hafiz will have a battle on the hands
as the Malaysian was beaten in the first round by Yu Hsing in the
Malaysia Open in January.
Choong Wei Feng, meanwhile, beat
India's P. Kashyap 21-16, 21-8 in the first round of the qualifiers
yesterday. But he failed to make the main draw when he lost 21-15,
22-20 to Denmark's Christian Lind Thomsen in the second round.
Men's
doubles World No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are also in a
precarious position as they are down to play former world champions Lars
Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark in the first round.
Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, whose performances have been on the
decline recently, face a first round exit at the hands of Taiwan's Chen
Hung Ling-Lin Yu Lang, who were runners-up in the German Open which
concluded on Sunday.
Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui
also face a tricky first round encounter against Indonesia's Meiliana
Jauhari-Greysia Polii.
Women's singles Wong Mew Choo will not
be spared either as she meets China's third seed Jiang Yanjiao.
Kien Keat-Pei Tty are also staring at a first round defeat in the
mixed doubles as they face two-time world champions Nova
Widianto-Lilyana Natsir of Indonesia today.
