Malaysian singles ace, Datuk Lee Chong Wei will not face Hong Kong's Wei Nan in the opening round of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open Superseries Premier as originally scheduled. Chong Wei will now take on Japanese Takuma Ueda, who came through the qualifying competition today.
Wei Nan, who surprised the Malaysian in the second round of the India Open last week, withdrew from the Malaysia Open.
Chong Wei will be joined by three other Malaysian players in the main draw of the men's singles which begins tomorrow. National champion Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Goh Soon Huat and Chong Yee Han all made it through the qualifying rounds today.
While the trio were delighted with their success, it proved to be a disappointing day for Chong Wei Feng who lost 21-7, 7-21, 17-21 to Japan's Kenichi Tago in a 44 minute match. Also out is Zulfadli Zulkifli who went down to Indonesia's Christie Jonathan 10-21, 25-27.
Iskandar, who has fully recovered from his heel injury, defeated Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-16, 18-21, 21-10 in the first match and Scotland's Alistair Casey 21-7, 21-14 in the second to advance to the main draw. He plays Indonesian Anthony Ginting in the opener.
"This is the first time I have qualified for the main draw in a Superseries event. It is a new thrill and new found confidence after I beat Sony. I face another Indonesian in the opening match in the main draw but I have my game plan. I know what to do on the court after playing two matches in the qualifying round." said Iskandar.
Yee Han was all smiles to have made his first Superseries main draw after coming back from a set down against Kenichi to prevail 16-21, 21-10, 21-19 in a 57 minute encounter. In the first match Yee Han defeated Hafiz Hashim 21-14, 21-17.
Soon Huat beat teammate Lim Chi Wing 21-16, 21-11 in 29 minutes to advance. In the first match Soon Huat beat Zulhelmi Zulkifli 21-8, 21-18.
