COACHING & TRAINING COMMITTEE MEETING

The Coaching and Training (C&T) committee met yesterday at the Juara Stadium Bukit Kiara. Among those who attended the meeting were BAM’s deputy president, Ybhg. Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, Honarary Secretary, Mr Ng Chin Chai, Honorary Treasurer Dato’ Wira Lim Teong Kiat and Technical Director, Morten Frost. The meeting was held to discuss on many different areas.

Firstly, it was concerning the player’s performance throughout the year. Datuk Seri stressed that among the 53 players in the senior squad, four players will be dropped by BAM. These players may have not been performing well this year and they will be notified by the end of the year. In addition, there will be an open selection trial held at Juara Stadium from the 13th – 16thDecember where BAM have decided to rope in at least 12 more new players. The states are allowed to send a maximum of two boys and two girls for this trial where they will train together with the players from BAM. However, this trial will only be part of the whole selection process, therefore, a conclusion cannot be made just based on this trial.

In terms of the preparation for Rio Olympics, Datuk Seri was very pleased especially with national number one, Lee Chong Wei’s achievement at the Yonex French Open and China Open Superseries. Chong Wei emerged as the champion in both tournaments to silence all those who felt that he could no longer perform. However, he showed his concerns on national’s top doubles pair, Goh V Shem/ Tan Wee Kiong as the pair have not been up to the mark in recent months and moreover, the emergence of former nationals, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong have made it more challenging.

As for Tee Jing Yi and doubles pair Vivian Hoo/ Woon Khe Wei, according to Datuk Seri, they have been progressing well. However, he stressed that Morten will have to work on their weaknesses as well as their consistency to stay on track to qualify for the Olympics.

“I realized that Vivian/ Khe Wei may have serious flaws that need to be addressed immediately as it is not just about qualifying for the Olympics but also to do well in this prestigious competition. As I have said before, we expect players who qualifies for Rio to be serious medal contenders as well. As for the training base before the Olympics, we have decided that there would not be a transit camp, instead, we will leave for Brazil at least two weeks before the actual competition for players to train at the athlete’s village itself,” said Datuk Seri after the meeting yesterday.

In addition, Datuk Seri did not miss the chance to congratulate Goh Jin Wei for her excellent performance to become the first and youngest girl to win the world junior title for Malaysia. He also made sure that Jin Wei will have proper guidance as being in the senior team at a very young age and at the same time, BAM will do its best to support her especially in terms of her education.

Datuk Seri next spoke on hiring more coaches and at the moment, BAM is looking for a suitable coach to join Tey Seu Bock and Hendrawan in the mens’ singles department as they require some helping hand since the number of players have increased. In the doubles department, as mentioned in the previous meeting, Cheah Soon Kit will be officially joining BAM next month and he will be in charge of the men’ doubles to further strengthen the team.
