GIRLS’ DOUBLES SAVE THE DAY AGAINST USA

Malaysia is one step away from emerging as champions in the sub-group stage. They will battle against India tonight to set up an exciting match against reigning champions, China for a place in the semi-finals. It was unfortunate that Malaysia had to face the top seeds in the last eight but nothing is impossible.

In the group stage match yesterday, they received a walkover from Zambia and defeated USA. However, it was not an easy path for the juniors against their opponents from USA when mixed doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei/ Teoh Mei Xing suffered a shocking defeat to Vinson Chiu/ Crystal Pan, 15/21, 21/16, 18/21. Thanks to boys’ singles, Yeoh Seng Zoe and boys’ doubles, Aaron Chia/ Soh Wooi Yik who won their respective matches, Malaysia was back in the lead.

Then came another blow from girls’ singles when Lee Ying Ying failed to secure the third point for Malaysia. She lost the match in three games, 24/26, 21/11, 15/21 to Jamie Hsu. The last match was the girls’ doubles and the partnership of M. Thinaah/ Teo Mei Xing were the saviors of the day when they prevailed against Victoria Chen/ Alicia Lam, 21/9, 21/13 giving Malaysia the third and winning point.

Although Malaysia won their match, it was surely a wake-up call for the players not to underestimate their opponents.
