Newly crowned national mixed doubles champion, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing are ready to take the next step of becoming the nation’s most promising pair after their seniors, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying when they compete at the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open next week.
Kian Meng/Pei Jing who were just paired up at the end of last year were hoping to slowly climb the ladder in the world rankings knowing that they are a new pair, however, least did they expect that their combination was indeed a good selection by the coaches.
In January this year, the pair who started off only as a qualifier at the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold went all the way to the finals before losing to Zheng Siwei/Li Yinhui of China. It was certainly a motivation for the pair who had even beaten the more experienced Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying in the semi-finals of the same tournament.
After a few weeks, the pair continued their consistent performance at the Yonex Polish Open International Challenge emerging as the runner-up followed by a semi-final finish the week after at the Orleans International Challenge.
That was not all, the pair also proved themselves in bigger tournaments despite losing in the second round. At the Bonny China Masters Grand Prix Gold, the pair defeated Riky Widianto/Puspita Richi Dili of Indonesia who were at least 30 rungs higher than them.
In addition, Kian Meng/Pei Jing also enjoyed a good outing during the Badminton Asia Championships when they overcame world No. 18, Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara in the first round of the championships.
Hence, the world No. 45 is hoping for another good performance when they leave for Chinese Taipei this coming weekend and the pair is expected to meet Huang Kaixiang/Huang Dongping of China in the first round.
