The BWF Para-Badminton World Championships that begin from 8 – 13th September was a success for the Malaysian athletes in Stoke Mandeville, England when they bagged 3 golds and 2 bronze at this biennial event. The Malaysian team that comprised of eight players was guided by three coaches, Moe Chin Kiat, Rani Jaafar and Woon Sze Mei.
Cheah Liek Hou was once again the hero bringing back the singles gold for Malaysia. He defended his title and with this win, he is now a proud five time world champion. That was not enough as he was back in action with his partner, Fozi Saaba to secure his second gold in the mens’ doubles event. The other gold came from Didin Taresoh.
As interesting it is, the para games in Malaysia are similar to the local circuits participated by national players like Lee Chong Wei and Chong Wei Feng. They also have two circuits and a Grand Prix Finals to identify the best players that will then be selected to represent Malaysia in international tournaments. The next major mission for our athletes are the Paralympics 2020 where for the first time, badminton has been included. This is a good opportunity for the athletes to prepare from now onwards.
