The first day of the Maybank Malaysia International Youth U-19 began today at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara. In the boys’ singles, R. Satheistharan lived up to his billing to progress to the next round but it was not the same for 2nd seed, Cheam June Wei who was shown the exit by Lee Chia Hao from Chinese Taipei. Sathies had an easy game against Lee Jian Liang of Singapore and his next opponent is Mark Shelley Alcala from the Philippines.
Lee Zii Jia
Among those who made it to the next round were Perak Open champion, Lee Zii Jia and also under-18 national champion, Yeoh Seng Zoe. The girls were also at their best today when Ng Qi Xuan, Eoon Qi Xuan, Ng Wan Win and Pearly Tan from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) checked into the second round of the tournament.
In last year’s U-19 tournament held in Sabah, Malaysia had one of the best results sweeping three titles from the five categories played. Ho Yen Mei was girls’ singles champion, Tan Jia Wei/ Soo Wooi Yik won the boys’ doubles and Chua Khek Wei/ Peck Yen Wei emerging champions in the mixed doubles event. In addition, three boys made it to the semi-finals in the boys’ singles, with Cheam June Wei being the runner-up. Malaysia is definitely eying for a good finish this time as well.
