PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria will be the president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
Yesterday, acting president Tan Sri Al-Amin Abdul Majid officially pulled out from the presidency post at the BAM’s annual general meeting on April 29. Al-Amin will be appointed be the adviser.
Norza will take over from incumbent president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, who has been on sick leave for the last two years.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who made Norza’s appointment yesterday, said the “solution” to the presidency tussle was reached out of a “family spirit” among the BAM council members.
“This solution is the best for BAM and for badminton in Malaysia as a whole. This sets an example for other sports associations on how to resolve a situation in a family spirit.
“The most important thing here is that the appointment of Datuk Norza as president has the full mandate of a united BAM. It has my support, Tan Sri Al-Amin and the BAM patron (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor),” said Khairy at a press conference at Seri Perdana.
Rosmah, the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, said with the presidency situation out of the way, the BAM must set their sights on taking badminton to greater heights.
“The new leadership must ensure that the performance of our badminton players be improved and be consistent. I don’t want to see it go up, and then go down.
“We will work together, united and as one family, to develop badminton in this country,” she said.
Al-Amin, the acting president, said the decision to appoint Norza was made in BAM’s best interests.
“We had heart-to-heart talks with each other, and this is the best solution we can come up with. Datuk Norza is young, and probably has more energy than me. He’s a capable candidate and we can sense his desire to make badminton great,” said Al-Amin.
Norza is grateful for the trust and endorsement, pledging to carry out the responsibility of leading BAM in the best way.
“I will take on this task with the spirit of wanting to see the level of our badminton rise to its highest level. I will lay out my plans in detail on April 29,” he said.
