AUCKLAND: Malaysia's top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying emerged champions of the SKYCITY New Zealand Grand Prix Gold event after defeating China's Zheng Siwei-Li Yinhui 21-19, 22-20 here today.
The third seeds, who were in excellent form today, took 45 minutes to claim their first title of the year. They have had a great run here which included surprising the topseeds, Hyun Ko Sung-Na Kim Ha in the semis yesterday.
It was sweet success today for Peng Soon and Liu Ying after missing out on the Thailand Masters where they lost in the final to Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen. Earlier in the year, the duo made the semifinals of the Far East Malaysia Masters.
Today's victory will also be a huge boost for the Malaysians ahead of the forthcoming Malaysian Open from Apr 5-10. The win will also a long way in building their confidence in the run-up to the Olympics.
